Indeed Hiring Lab: Indeed Job Postings Index

An index of total job postings on Indeed, seasonally adjusted and averaged over seven days, with February 1, 2020 equal to 100. Official public CSV files provide a timely view of hiring demand.

What it measures

  • Overall U.S. job-posting activity
  • Statewide postings across all occupations, including DC
  • National Indeed occupational-sector trends
  • Movement relative to each series’ own February 2020 baseline

What it does not measure

Most misreadings of labor data come from asking a dataset a question it was not built to answer. These are the limits worth holding onto.

  • A count of vacancies, hires or unique jobs across the entire labor market
  • An exact BLS SOC occupation or occupation-by-state series
  • Comparable market sizes: every series has its own baseline
  • A component of the Job Market Health score

Update cadence

Daily observations; refreshed weekly by the publisher.

Occupation pages name the specific release behind each figure and when it was imported, so you can see how current a number is rather than assuming it is new. More on that on about the data.

How JobMarketHealth uses it

  • The homepage shows national context; occupation-state pages show statewide context across all occupations. The hiring-demand explorer offers national, state and career-field series separately.
  • Four-week change is (latest index / prior index − 1) × 100, using an observation at or within seven days before the 28-day comparison date. Missing comparisons remain unavailable.
  • We check the official feed on page requests, cache successful responses for 12 hours, and use a saved source copy if a request fails. Observations older than 14 days are marked overdue. Retrieval dates and observation dates are displayed separately.
  • Charts sample weekly observations from approximately 13 weeks. The latest observation is always retained. Indeed can revise historical data.
  • Data is licensed CC BY 4.0 by Indeed Hiring Lab. JobMarketHealth calculates displayed changes and simplifies the time series for presentation. No API key, job scraping or employer API is used.

Where it sits
